MycoLogic Inc. was co-founded in 1994 by Dr. Will Hintz and the Innovation and Development Corporation at the University of Victoria. Our initial objective was to develop and commercialize a biological herbicide for use in vegetation management.
We recognized a need to develop a product which was effective for weed control while being more selective and environmentally safe. Fundamental research conducted by scientists at the Canadian Forest Service identified a native species of fungus that showed great potential as the active ingredient for our bioherbicides. The ingredient, Chondrostereum. purpureum is a local, naturally occurring fungus which inhibits the resprouting and regrowth of cut stumps – resulting in minimal effects on non-target species, soils, fauna, and waterways.
With financial support from provincial and federal granting agencies, the Canadian Forest Service and BC Hydro, applied research and commercial development were subsequently conducted at the University of Victoria.
After ten years of hard work and $1.4 million in research funding, our first biological herbicide Chontrol Peat Paste received full registration as a pesticide product both in Canada (Pest Management Regulatory Agency) and in the United States (Environmental Protection Agency).
Looking ahead, MycoLogic Inc. will continue to advance new product formulations and develop new biocontrol products for the North American market. We will also pursue contract research projects and seek opportunities for new biocontrol and bioremediation microorganisms.
