What is a Biological Herbicide?

A biological herbicide is a non-chemical herbicide that contains a microorganism as the active ingredient. It may be used to prevent, or suppress the growth of a weed species. A weed may be considered as any plant that is growing where it is not wanted; attractive ornamentals may thus be considered weeds, if they appear in a location where they pose a problem.

Most existing biological herbicides contain either bacterial or fungal species as the active ingredient. Since they are considered to be herbicides, in the same way as all chemical herbicide products, biological herbicides must be subject to the same regulatory evaluation in order to ensure their safety for human populations, non-target species and the environment in general. The successful registration of a biopesticide will therefore confirm product safety for its designated use.
